Iain joined Franks & Co in 1997, having previously worked firstly in the intellectual property department of a large international firm of Solicitors and then for a firm of Patent Attorneys.

Technical
Iain read Astronomy at the University of Sheffield specialising in radio astronomy and instrumentation. Following his BSc Honours degree he then obtained his MSc in Radiation and Medical Physics at St Andrews University. Iain later acquired a Postgraduate Diploma in Computing from the University of Bradford.
Iain has many years of industrial research experience. At Imperial College London and the National Engineering Laboratory he investigated industrial instrumentation and computing as applied to oil and gas flow pipelines for a consortium of the World's largest oil and gas companies.

Iain is a representative before the UK Patent Office, UK Trade Marks Registry, UK Designs Registry, the Community Trade Marks and Designs Office, and the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).
Iain has a general grounding in all aspects of intellectual property, including Trade Marks, Designs and Patents and Copyright internationally.
For patents, Iain is experienced in the fields of instrumentation, medical physics, computer and internet related inventions and electronics, digital image processing, speech recoginition but also handles general electrical/mechanical work. Iain acts for an international client base including industry and universities in the UK and the US, he is also responsible for the European patent portfolio of a leading Japanese electronics and computing corporation.
Iain also has other experience in medical devices, solar cells, food products and containers, gas & oil boilers, tax software, automotive engineering, sports devices, consumer products, biosensors.
Iain has 8 years of Trade Marks experience in UK and international trade matters acting for a leading UK mineral water supplier and a domestic home appliance manufacturer. His experience includes managing the worldwide trade marks portfolio of a well known British consumer electronics and durables manufacturer.
Iain is also active in the securing and enforcement of registered and unregistered design rights, in the UK, and abroad.
Iain is a Chartered Physicist (C.Phys) and a Member of the Institute of Physics (M.Inst.P).
